Thermoplastic Lining for Structures

Sometimes names other than concrete protective liner are used in a specification. One of the common terms is ‘thermoplastic lining for structures’. This will be used most commonly for cast in place concrete structures that require concrete protection.

The following is taken from a specification for concrete protection liner installation in situ for a sludge storage tank:

Intent - Thermoplastic Lining for Structures

.1 This section specifies material and performance criteria required to furnish and install high-density polyethylene material, cast into interior walls and floors of reinforced concrete structures including:

.1 Raw Water Equalization Tank
.2 Filtered Water Tank
.3 Sludge Storage Tanks

.2 Provide thermoplastic lining suitable for liquid tight application at hydrostatic heads of 5 m, a minimum temperature of 0.5 C and a maximum temperature of 25 C.

It is critical to not rely on just one name when reviewing a specification looking for concrete protection liner (CPL). Other names and/or keywords to look for include:

  • Embedment Liner

  • Geomembrane Liner

  • Anchor Sheet

  • CPL

  • Concrete Protective Liner

  • Concrete Protection Liner

  • Thermoplastic Liner

  • Anchored Thermoplastic CPL

Some of these names are also used for geomembrane liner that is not concrete specific, such as pond liner, or landfill liner. It is important to carefully review the entire specification to look for indicators that the liner is intended for concrete imbedment.

In the realm of construction specifications, the name of a product can vary, but its purpose remains constant. As Shakespeare eloquently put it, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Similarly, whether referred to as a thermoplastic liner, geomembrane liner, or concrete protective liner, the function of protecting concrete structures is unchanged. Thus, understanding the various terms used in specifications ensures that the essential quality and integrity of the protection are maintained.
